πŸ‘‰ What to Look For in a Hair Dye Brush and Bowl

βœ”οΈ Non slide rubber bottom

βœ”οΈ Big enough for your color product, at least 5 ounces

βœ”οΈ Wide brushes for root touch up strokes and narrow brushes for detailed strokes

βœ”οΈ Small brushes for fine blending “color melting” and detail work

🚩 Avoid When Buying a Hair Dye Brush and Bowl

  • Avoid oval color bowls that don’t allow wide color brushes to fit
  • Stay away from color bowls with no rubber ring on the bottom, the ring prevents the bowl from sliding around when you scoop up more color product
  • Be aware when a color bowl doesn’t have a big handle, it’s not a big deal most of the time but some stylists will not use bowls without the big handles and easy-pour spouts

50 Pairs Disposable Non Latex Color Gloves Small for $19.99

Why Do I Need Color Gloves?

Hair color and dye tend to stick to the fingernails and stain the hands pretty good as well as the hair. Wearing gloves will help prevent you looking like a smurf or like you’ve committed murder.

πŸ‘‡ ✨ Personal and Professional Favorite Tool of my own βœ¨πŸ‘‡for Color Services

Color Key for Smooth Color Tube Squeezing for $5.99

What is a Color Key For?

When you squeeze a color tube, similar to toothpaste, it can be hard to get it all out without popping the wrong end of the tube. A color key eliminates the mess and keeps the tube looking clean and pretty, but more importantly, makes it easy to use next time that tube is necessary.

Color Capes to Protect Clothes and Client from Color Drips

Poly Chemical Cape for Chemical Hair Services for $8.99

Pros

πŸ‘ Machine Washable

πŸ‘ Bleach Proof

πŸ‘ Polyester, not plastic so that the client isn’t too hot under a plastic sheet cape

πŸ‘ Lightweight

Cons

πŸ‘Ž It’s cheap, so the longer it is used the more frayed the cape will become

Nylon MagicZone Chemical Cape $7.55

Pros

πŸ‘ Chemical and Bleach Proof

πŸ‘ Water Resistant

πŸ‘ Machine Washable

πŸ‘ Better for Perms but also good for bleach and color

Cons

πŸ‘Ž Water resistant capes typically aren’t ideal for cutting because after spraying the hair for the haircut the hair will stick to the cape

πŸ‘Ž Nylon can be warmer for some clients than polyester

Why Would I Need Chemical Capes?

Chemical capes are usually bleach-proof, which means they don’t stain or leave white or other ungodly color splotches on the cape for your next guests or the next time you do color on yourself at home.

Hair Foil 5″ Wide 100 Count for $5.99

Hair Foil 5″ Wide 500 Count for $12.99

Why Would I need Foils?

If more than one color is being used to achieve a specific look, foil is excellent to prevent the colors from melting or bleeding together. Foil is commonly used during highlighting services.

Bleach Proof Color Apron with Zipper Pockets for $24.99

Why Would I Need an Apron?

Believe it or not, the product is super runny and does tend to spray off of the brush and onto you, if you are doing someone else’s hair.

How to Use a Hair Dye Brush and Bowl

Step 1 – Using a color key and by measuring the number of ounces of color you need from the tube by the ounce measurements on the side of the tube (kind of like how butter measures TBS on the packaging) roll the unoxygenated color product into the color bowl.

Step 2 – Following the directions on the color box determine the ratio of developer you will need, and whether you need liquid or cream developer to mix with the color in the bowl. Be sure that you use a weight scale when pouring the developer to reach an accurate ounce measurement. Too much or too little will change the entire end-result color.

Step 3 – By using a color brush or color whisk thoroughly mix the color and developer in the color bowl until it’s all smooth.

Step 4 – Don’t forget your gloves! And grab those foils if you are doing a multi-process service (highlights and lowlights). And check the clock! Knowing what time you begin the color process will help you have an idea of how much processing time is left once the color is applied entirely.

Step 5 – Section the hair into quarters. The Front two, and Back two. Once these sections are clipped, beginning with the front two sections you then use the tail of the color brush to begin making small horizontal sections and use the bristled end of the brush dipped in the color from the bowl and apply the color to the roots first, then brush it down the rest of the section. Continue making sections of similar small widths to accurately achieve even saturation.

Step 6 – Set a timer! The color box will give you an accurate estimate of how much time is needed for that brand to successfully complete the chemicals for hair coloring process to complete processing and it will be time to rinse the product out.

Step 7 – Rinse the color out with cool water. This will keep the cuticle down and keep the color that just processed inside.

How to Properly Wash a Brush and Bowl

Using hot water thoroughly scrub the bowl with the color brush ensuring no color is left in the bowl to compromise the next color product in the bowl.

Using your hand in the hot/warm water swipe the brush in a circular motion around your palm and pinch the bristles from the base to the ends under the water to make sure that all of the color product comes out before the next use.

The Difference Between Hair Dye and Hair Color

I must add this portion to the article because my hairstylist heart cannot go without educating my readers about the common misconception that ‘there is no difference between dye and color’.

There IS!!!!

πŸ‘‰ Here it is – you dye Easter eggs, you color hair. πŸ‘ˆ

However… you can dye hair but that’s typically not what happens.

To dye hair means that the color stained the outside of the hair strands, it’s harder to remove but you can dye on top of it again. Henna is an example of dyeing hair.

Keep in mind that if you dye over it again you will then have an undertone of whatever dye was left on the hair from before.

To color hair, means that the artificial pigment seeps beneath the cuticle, the shell on the outside of the hair strand, and clings to the natural pigment. It is a chemical process.

When the hair is colored it is easier to remove and make minor adjustments to the hair.

FAQs for Best Hair Dye Brush and Bowl

Is it Better to Apply Hair Dye with a Brush?

Yes. If the color chemical products are creamy and the developer is a cream developer a brush is best to use for color or dye application.

If liquid toners are used for the hair, and seem runny and need to be applied like a shampoo, likely it won’t be applied with a brush and bowl but with an applicator bottle with a nozzle.

For overall color using a brush is better because you will be able to thoroughly saturate each parting without worrying about the section being too thick and not being applied all the way through.

What are Hair Dye Bowls Called?

A hair dye bowl in the professional world is called a color bowl.

They come in different shapes and sizes. Generally they can hold 5oz or so of product and can come in round and oval shapes. Some have magnetic bottoms to prevent sliding around on metal trays, but most have plastic or rubber bottoms.

The best color bowls have handles and some color brushes come with a hook so as to not accidentally slip out of the bowl and make a mess of the product.

What Brush is Best for Dying Hair?

The brush best for dying hair is definitely the FAMAR color brushes. They are sturdy, long-lasting, used by professionals around the world, and come in wide and average widths.
