How to use purple shampoo to get orange and copper tones out of your hair.

Purple Shampoo / the color wheel

Copper, yellow, orange… do you have warm undertones in your hair? And you can’t stand it!? It’s okay, there’s a simple solution.

But first, we have to know how purple shampoo works, why it works, and that starts with the color wheel.

The Color Wheel

Professionals use the color wheel to strategically treat, color, and tone hair. The color wheel starts with the primary, blue, red, and yellow. And secondary colors, violet, orange, green.

Purple shampoo and the color wheel

Why is the color wheel important?

Say you got your hair highlighted, but after it’s been bleached, turns out orange. We’ve all seen it, that lovely sunset orange. That is an undertone.

Undertones are what make brassy hair look orange and ashy hair look cool toned.

If you pay attention and use the color wheel as a tool you will be able to choose the correct toner and tone your unwanted tones out.

Using purple shampoo to tone out orange

To tone out orange, we turn back to the color wheel. What is exactly opposite to orange on the wheel? Blue. Therefore, to change the orange tone, a professional would put a blue on it.

On the other hand, platinum blonde is still trending. If any of my readers are platinum blonde, you love the white and silver tones, I agree! It’s gorgeous!

But the silver-y and white colors tend to eventually fade the toner that the original professional treated the platinum hair with. Thus leaving the hair with a slightly yellow tint.

Using Purple Shampoo to Treat Warm Tones at Home

How is this treated at home? Do you have to see a professional?

No!

If we consult the color wheel again, what is opposite yellow? Purple.

Blue and purple shampoos are the best and easiest way to treat natural warm undertones at home. Blue, used for orange undertones. And purple for yellow undertones.

Can using toning shampoo constantly damage my hair?

It is possible to overtone the hair. Toning shampoos (purple and blue) are not recommended for your daily shampoo.

Have you ever seen grandma and her purple hair? It’s because she is over toning with toning shampoos.

How often should toning shampoo be used?

My professional opinion, using a toning shampoo two or three times in a row will not damage or overtone the hair. But I highly recommend changing up your shampoos. Use a regular shampoo for a few weeks, and then switch to the toning shampoo once or twice.

But which product is the best? My personal favorite is Biolage ColorLast Purple shampoo.
