How to Wash Hair to Prevent Hair Loss
Hair loss, it’s scary to think about. So, we’re going to talk about how to wash hair to prevent hair loss. And changing priorities without really changing your life.
But can you actually change your priorities without changing your life? What does that mean? It’s not as bad as it sounds. Preventing hair loss -causes and care- doesn’t have to be as bad as you imagine.
For those struggling with hair loss due to a stressful schedule, the kid’s schedules, an irritating and demanding boss, or medical or health reasons, let me help you.
One simple thing we can do to prevent hair loss is to wash our hair properly.
How to wash hair to prevent hair loss
Remember that the scalp will lose about 100 hairs naturally every day. And that many will start to grow at the same time. This is called ‘natural fall-out’ and is nothing to be concerned about.
- Don’t wash too often. By stripping the scalp of its natural oils by frequently washing the hair even if it’s not dirty, will make the skin think that it’s constantly dry and will train the scalp to focus on making more oil to try to keep the follicles healthy. If the scalp thinks it’s constantly dry it may let go of more hair than you want.
Is it Okay to Wash your Hair Once Per Week?
- Use a sulfate-free and silicone-free shampoo. Generic products use a ton of filler ingredients like wax and silicone that will build up on the hair and on the scalp, clogging follicles and preventing the hair to grow. When washing hair to prevent hair loss you want to use a shampoo that won’t clog the follicles.
Silicone isn’t listed on the ingredients as ‘silicone’ instead look out for ingredients dimethicone, cetyl dimethicone, cetearyl methicone, dimethiconol, stearyl dimethicone, cyclomethicone, amodimethicone, trimethylsilylamodimethicone, and cyclopentasiloxane.
Is Silicone-Free Shampoo Good?
- Don’t scrub too hard. Use your fingertips to massage the dead hairs off of the scalp but don’t scrub too hard and damage the skin around the hairs. Hair is an afterthought to the body, if the body is injured in any way the body will focus on healing that instead of the hair.
What Shampoo Do I Use for Hair Loss?
- What if you want to use a chemical-free and all-natural cleanser instead of a shampoo? Shampoos sometimes fail you, I understand, and sometimes you have to take the natural route to re-train your hair and restore the pH. If this is the case for you, I highly recommend trying an Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse. It is not damaging to the hair or cause any unwanted smells.

Stress and Hair Loss
For now, we’re going to talk about stress. Even with the right products, if you don’t take time to have at least a tiny quiet time to calm yourself internally, you’ll see the stress come out on your skin and even in your hair.
Pause, Breathe
The best thing to do during these seasons of your life is to slow down. As impossible as it sounds. Make a priority of carving out 10 minutes (that’s all) of your day to keep for yourself.
π DO NOT skip this! Pause and Breathe throughout the day. Even if it’s just for 10 seconds at a time.
π DO NOT give away this precious time to someone else’s demands of schedule.
βοΈ Set your alarm 10 minutes earlier. Or stay up 10 minutes later. Take 10 minutes at your lunch break to do something quiet and restorative to your health.
Meditate
π Do a 5 minute yin yoga routine.
πTake a 10 minute walk alone around the office building, or to the stop sign on your street and back.
πMake yourself a cup of tea and lock yourself in your bedroom with your favorite book.
π Take some deep breaths.
π 10 minutes, that’s all you need.
Don’t tie your hair too tight
Hair loss while sleeping can be prevented by not tying up your hair in tight top knots, buns, or sleeping in an updo with bobby pins. For a follicle that already has a hard time holding on to hair strands, it’s difficult to keep hanging on while it’s being tugged on for 6-8 hours every night.
The easiest solution for those of you who simply cannot sleep without having your hair pulled up, that used to be me too, a simple braid, or french braid is the simplest solution. It will stay pulled back without creating too tight tension on the follicles at the scalp.
Be mindful of your overall health. What kind of habits do you have that affect every aspect of your life, including your hair?
