Different Kinds of Professional Hair Trimmers for Barbers and Other Hair Professionals

The Difference Between Regular Trimmers and T- Trimmers

T- Trimmers– This blade is shaped wider on the edges than the tool itself. By using the edge of the tool it cuts closer to the skin if used at an angle instead of straight-on flat to the skin.

A T- Trimmer is the best to use for designs.

Outliner Trimmers– Outliner Trimmers do not have a blade that extends past the width of the handle of the tool.

Top 3 Best Professional Hair Trimmer Outliners for Barbers

Outliner Trimmers can also be used for designs but don’t get quite the same sharpness as the T- Trimmer.

Best Professional Outliner Trimmers

Not unlike the Andis T- Trimmer – a Master Barber favorite – the Andis Outliner Trimmers are also a favorite among barbers. They work just as well, but the only difference is that these have a blade that does not extend past the width of the tool.

Using Pro Terms… Trimmers are NOT clippers

We have already talked about the correct professional terms for these tools and the difference between clippers, trimmers, guards, and foil trimmers in Barber Reviewed Best Professional Clippers and The Best Barber Tools for Fades- Hidden Tips & Secrets

Trimmers are simpler and smaller than clippers and are only used to trim up the hairs around the ears and at the nape, on the back of the neck. Or used to cut designs into short haircuts. Also used for beard trimming.

How to Use Professional Hair Trimmers for Barbers (and at home)

Hair trimmers are used for the fine details. To make clean lines around the edges of the haircut, mostly around the ears and the back of the neck.

👍 Have your client look down so that their nape (back of the neck) is flat. If the client is looking straight ahead and you trim their hairline straight, it will be crooked once they do look down. So have the client look down.

👍 At the nape, be sure that your trimmer blade is facing down. This will get the blade closest to the skin and will not cut your guest.

👍 Move the ears out of the way with your finger. Don’t worry, ears are flexible, they’ll move without hurting your client.

👍 When going around the ears, the trimmer will follow the motion of your wrist. So, make sure that your wrist is turning in a smooth and fluid half-moon motion if you want to make the hairline round around the ear (don’t forget to move the ear!). OR you can continue moving around the hairline with the trimmer blade facing down. But in the end, using the straight trimmer blade around the ear is harder than using your wrist, and can make the edge around the ear a little more boxy.

What NOT to do with trimmers

❌ For a more natural grow-out for your client, don’t cut too high above the hairline at the nape (the back of the neck). Only cut the little frizzies around the ears and at the nape. Nobody wants to have to grow out an inch of stubble on the back of their head because the hairline was accidently cut too high.

❌ If a blade is broken, or a tooth is missing from the trimmers, DO NOT use the trimmer or it will cut the skin. Sometimes the blade of the trimmer can pinch and cause a little bleeding. Especially around the ears.

Maintenance and Replacement Blades

Most Trimmer blades (T- Trimmer or Outliner) can be replaced and are relatively inexpensive. Just make sure that the replacement blade is compatible with the brand and model of tool that you purchase.

Some professional hair trimmers for barbers and other hair professionals (or even at home!) need a screwdriver to remove the blade and replace with the new blade. Others clip on and pop off just as easily.

Maintaining trimmer blades is simple. No grease is required, simply get clipper oil – clipper and trimmer oil have a little vile that comes with the tool and can be used on the same both clippers and trimmers – and squeeze a few drops on the running blade.

Keeping your blades oiled will prevent rust and will help clear out any possible clogs of hair that might get caught behind or in between the blades.
