πŸ‘‰ 3/8 of an inch ( ” )

πŸ‘‰ #3 Clipper or Trimmer Guard

Beard Trim Pro Tip

Never memorize what the perfect length for your beard is by the trimmer guard color. Not all clippers or trimmers come with a color guard length system and when they do the colors aren’t always the same length.

Always memorize the length by number, inches, or millimeters.

10mm for Different Beard Textures

10mm Beard Length for Straight Beards

For men with straight beards, it’s a perfect length because it is just long enough that it’s not itchy and just short enough that it doesn’t stick out and look as frizzy as a straight short beard can.

10mm Beard Length for Curly Beards

For curly beards, a 10mm is also good though it will appear slightly shorter than 10 mm because it will curl up a little bit. But again, this beard length is just right for men who want to have a beard that looks short and kept but not long enough to be frizzy or itchy on their skin.

10mm Beard Length on Blonde or Ginger Beards

10mm isn’t that long, equivalent to 3/8″ just a fraction shorter than half an inch. On light colored hair it does appear shorter than it is. So for those with blonde and ginger or red beards that want a just-a-hint-more-than-stubble appearance the #3 will create that illusion.

Don’t worry my dear blonde guys! Your beard is longer than it looks!

How Long does the 10mm Beard Last?

It entirely depends on the man.

I have seen clients that their beard literally grows while sitting in my chair while receiving a shave.

Others don’t trim their beards but once a month.

Most commonly though, once a week to once every two weeks is usually how long a 10mm beard will last before it starts to look a little shaggy or frizzy.

What is a Clipper Guard?

A clipper guard is a little attachment that goes onto your electric beard cutting tool of choice, either a trimmer or clipper.

The clipper guard will keep a specific distance between the skin (the base) and the blade. So if you don’t want to cut the beard down to baby-face length, a clipper guard is your friend.

Considering Clipper Guards

Using clipper guards guarantees that the length of the beard is consistent all the way around. You don’t have to use clipper guards if you don’t want to though.

Other ways to trim a beard is by –

  • Trimmer over comb
  • Scissor over comb
  • Clipper freehand

But clipper guards are the fastest and most consistent for guaranteed length. You should use a guard if you are really trying to get a 10mm beard length.

Why are Clipper Guards Important?

If you’re really wanting 10mm or the #3 beard, a clipper guard is the way to go.

Not everyone has the steadiest hands to trim a beard freehand. With either trimmers or scissors. Especially when you are doing it yourself and trying to see while stretching your face or neck out in the mirror and only can see with one eye.

But that’s okay! That’s why we use clipper guards.

Consider Guard Length

Like discussed at the beginning of this article, 10mm can look different on different colors and textures of facial hair.

Blonde hair tends to look shorter than it actually is. Straight dark facial hair looks exactly the length you cut it. Curly beard texture changes the look as well and you might have to have a longer beard than the 10mm just to achieve the illusion that you have a 10mm beard.

It’s okay to experiment with the guard lengths to figure out exactly which one is best for you and best beard length for you.

20mm Beard Length

There actually is no 20mm guard to make the perfect 20mm beard length. The closest we can get is the #6 guard, or 3/4″, which is 19mm.

For a perfectly round 20mm beard length you’ll need to grow the beard between 2-4 days for that extra millimeter, or blow dry the beard straight to make it look longer.

What’s the Most Attractive Beard Length?

According to a study in 2008 women find the #3, or 10mm beard length the most attractive.

Personally, as a female barber, it is my favorite beard length on my husband because it’s no longer scratchy for me, itchy on his skin, and looks very trim and professional. Not to mention sexy πŸ˜‰

He has a curly beard and the 10mm beard trim length on him lasts about two weeks before it looks frizzy and he has to trim it down again.

What is the Most Professional Beard Length?

The most professional beard length is anywhere between a #1-#4 length.

Or in other words, 1/8″ – 1/2″ in length (between 1.6mm and 13mm)

It’s just above stubble but just below medium beard lengths.
