What Determines the Best Conditioner for Dry Hair?

There is no perfect universal product out there that will work for everyone. So you have to figure out what the best conditioner for your dry hair might be.

How do we go about figuring that out?

Figure out what kind of ‘dry’ your hair is-

  • Is your hair dry from using hot tools, and over-using the blow dryer or curling iron?
  • Is the dryness from the changing of the seasons? The weather?
  • Is your hair dry because it has recently had a chemical treatment, like a color or highlight?
  • It’s been a while and might just be time for a deep conditioning treatment. #pamperyourself

After determining what kind of dry your hair is, then we can go about treating it in the right way.

What is the Best Conditioner for Dry Blonde Hair – Dry from Heat Damage

It’s easy for heat damage to occur.

Should I Use Heat Protectant on Wet Hair?

Once the cuticle has been burnt off, or cracked because of a chemical treatment, like a highlight, and then cracked further with heat, there is no repairing that damage.

However, you can prevent further damage by using a heat protectant EVERY TIME you use a hot tool and use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, as well as a leave-in conditioner.

Also, washing your hair less frequently will help the hair and scalp maintain the pH and not strip the good oils that the scalp produces.

By using a gentle cleanser, and silicone-free shampoo, you will still cleanse the hair and scalp without stressing the blonde, or drying the hair further.

Best Conditioner for Dry Blonde Hair- Dry From the Change in Weather

Getting dry skin, dry hair, and allergies happens to everyone at the change of the seasons.

I get particularly dry when the weather is about to change from hot to cold, and the pressure changes in the atmosphere.

The best way to treat dryness from the change of weather is to-

✔️ Take a Fish Oil or Omega 3 supplement. Hydrate your body from the inside out.

✔️ Drink more water. Almost everyone is dehydrated and could use a little more water in the body. Hair is an afterthought when keeping the body alive, so if the water is needed more urgently elsewhere, the body will take it from the skin and hair. So, drink more water!

✔️ Natural hydrating products for your skin and hair, like coconut oil, olive oil, or a flaxseed gel mask for your hair.

Let’s Talk About Chemical Damage From Color Services…

Going blonde is exciting! It’s beautiful. But it is so hard on your hair.

After going blonde, it is very important to keep your hair toned and hydrated. Less washing, and only use hot tools on your hair on special occasions.

Heat elements make the cuticle lift and dry out the hair. So on bleached hair, it is a bit riskier to use, and it’s possible to cause a little more damage if you wash and curl your bleached blonde hair more often.

Color doesn’t lift color

Rule #1 intro to Color, cosmetology school 101, color doesn’t lift color. You can’t put a color on top of a color and expect it to be lighter, only darker.

For example, if you have a red crayon and you’ve created a lovely red circle on your paper, but decide it needs to be pink. Would a pink crayon on top of the red make it pink? No. Why? Because red is darker.

Color doesn’t lift color. You can’t put a lighter color on a darker color and expect it to become light.

With that said, how does a darker color become light? How can you lift a natural color?

Bleach.

Not household bleach! But professional, hair lightener, designed to lift natural pigment out of hair.

Going blonde

NEVER! use household cleaning bleach! DO NOT EVER put Clorox or other bleach cleaning products on your hair. It will damage the hair beyond repair and can chemically burn your skin. It’s not worth it, it won’t help.

Professional bleach will lift the cuticle, the outer protectant shell of the hair, penetrating the strand and remove the natural color molecules inside the hair strand.

As cool and scientific as this process is, bleach lifted and cracked the cuticle on the hair.

No matter what brand of professional bleach went on the hair to go blonde, any level of blonde, it’s still damaging. Whether a person is going all blonde or highlighting, it still will cause a little damage.

This is why getting your hair professionally highlighted, bleached, or lightened with professional products is very important. Even though it’s expensive, a professional is trained for emergencies and what to do when the bleach has been washed out and your hair is left in its undertone state. We talked about undertone in How do I get copper and yellow out of my hair?

Dry Blonde Hair from Bleach

One of the first and simplest ways to treat and care for bleached blonde hair is using conditioner in the shower, and using leave-in conditioner after your shower too.

This will help your hair stay sleek and encourage the cuticle to stay laying down, not allowing any more hydration to seep through the cracked cuticle.

Treat Yourself with the Best Conditioner for Dry Bonde Hair

Using a silicone-free, and sulfate-free conditioner are definitely the best conditioners for dry blonde hair.

Best Hair Mask for Dry Hair of All Hair Types

Routinely and regularly using hydrating masks will help your hair too.

Best Hair Mask for All Hair Types – How to Grow Hair Fast

A hair mask is a deep conditioning treatment that will help the hair stay hydrated and prevent the hair from becoming brittle and break.

There are many recipes that you can find online of homemade masks that are healthy and affordable to make. Or there are professional masks that you can buy, pre-made, and use.

A mask is used by placing the product (whether made yourself via online recipe, or professional mask) on your hair and letting it sit for 15-20 minutes.

Hair masks are an excellent treat for both your hair AND time to pamper yourself. You can take this 15 minutes to take a bath, do your nails, or even, do a face mask too! It’s best to use a mask about once a week.

To sum up

These are the best and most honest recommendations I can give you for caring for your bleached hair.

Do not be discouraged! This is not an article to dissuade or scare you into not going blonde. You can go blonde and it not damage your hair beyond repair.

Though I highly recommend getting blonde treatments done by a professional. Doing highlights or going blonde yourself at home is risky and can be dangerous.

DO NOT use regular household bleach on your hair EVER!
