The Benefits of Express Salon Add On Services
Why offer express salon add on services?
When you have a client in your chair, or full books for the day, you know just about precisely how much money you are going to take home at the end of the day, excluding tips.
But if you are good at selling add on services, you can make your salon unique by offering extra last-minute services to the guests already booked for the day, AND increase your business’ income significantly!
Not only do commission salons need to promote add on service so their stylists can make more money as well as the salon, but also, the more add ons a ticket has the bigger your 20% tip will be!
The final reason your salon should offer add on services is because if your salon doesn’t offer the little services with the big ones, the clients will be going somewhere else for those little services.
✨ Little things add up! Offer the little things for your clients! ✨

How to Charge for Salon Add On Services
Determining the prices for salon add on services should be calculated by how much time it takes and the cost of the product used, if any products are used.
Most salon add on services should be 30 minutes or less. If it takes longer than 10 minutes, the price should increase more than typical quick add on services.
If the service requires a product that costs $5 for you to buy, and 10 minutes for you to perform when you add it on to a regular service, the price should be $15 for that add on service.
If a there are no products needed for the add on service, braids for example, but it takes you 15-20 minutes, it should cost anywhere between $10 – $20. Almost a dollar per minute.
Take your location into account. If you are in a rural area, a simple braid service may be more simple and take less time so charge accordingly. If your salon is in the middle of a busy city, where prices are what they are, you can charge a hint more than a dollar per minute for add on services.
Consider that if an easier add on service is asked for frequently the revenue it will accumulate will add up crazy fast. So if a simple braid costs $5 for 5 minutes, but you are asked to add it onto 10 services per day you’ll make $50 extra, but if you increase the price by a dollar or two, instead you will make an extra $60-70 every day BEFORE the 20% tip!
Services to Add On for Anyone
Let’s break down the 24 add on services on this list and talk about they should be offered to the right crowd but also, making these services available to everyone and marketing it to every type of service that happens in the salon.
- Scientific brushing or other Exfoliating Treatments
A scientific brush is when the hair is parted in half inch sections and the scalp scrubbed with a soft bristle brush. You can also offer other exfoliating treatments such as sugar or salt scalp scrubs.
Cost of Service- $12 – $15
Time the Service Should Take- 10-15 minutes
How to Market the Service- “I’ve noticed that you have some extra dry skin on your scalp. Do you have a hard time with that at home? Would you like to add an exfoliating scalp treatment to your service today? It costs an additional $12.”
Nylon Bristle Brush Pack of 6 for $12.45
- Paraffin Wax Dip
Better yet, you could offer an exfoliating hand treatment before a paraffin wax and hand massage!
Paraffin wax is a soft wax that dries on the skin and peels off easily (it’s kind of addicting if you are really bored), sealing in moisture into the hands and helping heal calluses and rough dry skin.
A paraffin wax dip is such an easy add on to have in the salon! All you need is a paraffin wax pot, new paraffin wax, plastic wrap or paraffin baggies, and let the client sit with the paraffin setting on their hands while their hair is being washed!
Cost of Service- $15
Time the Service Should Take- 10 minutes
How to Market the Service- “The weather has been making my hands dry, I love to get a paraffin wax. Would you like to add a paraffin wax treatment while we wash your hair out?”

- Waxing services (eyebrows, ears, lip, nose or other facial waxing)
Honey wax or hard wax both are safe to use on the face, though most salons prefer to use hard wax on the face because it’s less risky and harsh on the sensitive facial skin.
If your professional license in your state allows you to perform waxing services, by all means! Talk to your client about their unibrow and those nose hairs you see poking out. They probably bother your client more than they bother you.
Cost of Service- $10 per wax service (eyebrows, nose, lip, ears) Or run a package deal for all of the above for $30
Time the Service Should Take- Less than 20 minutes
How to Market the Service- “Would you like me to just wax that middle section between your brows for you? It’ll last longer than trimming and then you don’t have to worry about it. It costs $10.”

- Hand massage
Everybody uses their hands. Everybody has tension stored up and an excuse not to relax. A hand massage added to a service can be done during a shampoo, with a hot towel, while color is processing, or after a paraffin wax.
Cost of Service- $5
Time the Service Should Take- 7 minutes
How to Market the Service- “If you are interested in a hand massage while we let your color process, it’s complimentary today, though if you would like to add it next time it is an additional $5
Earthly Body Hemp Massage Lotion 8oz for $15.95
- Shoulder and Neck Massage
Not a single adult on the planet doesn’t hold tension in their neck and shoulders. I have had clients come to me only to request a shampoo massage (no other services) just so their migraine or headache would go away.
Don’t underestimate how much a tip increases when you give a good massage in the shampoo bowl AND add a shoulder and neck massage before or after a wash.
Cost of Service- Complimentary or an additional $5 – $10
Time the Service Should Take- 5-10 minutes (remember a dollar per minute)
How to Market the Service- “You mentioned having a headache, would you like me to take a few minutes to help ease some of that tension for you? We have a neck and shoulder massage on the service menu for $10.”
- Hot Towel Treatments such as Quick Facial Treatments
This treatment is great to tag onto other add on services and just combine the add on prices. However it wouldn’t hurt to have as an additional add on standing alone on the menu.
Heat eases tension and is just comforting. Having a hot towel on the face during a shampoo, for men, or hot towels on the hands for ladies with makeup, feels like extra pampering.
If a quick facial is on the menu, slather on some lotion or hydrating cream on the face before applying the hot towel. Let the towel sit on the face while you are washing their hair. When removing the hot towel from the face wipe off the remaining lotion and massage the face, especially the forehead and jaw because there is a lot of tension held there.
Cost of Service- $10
Time the Service Should Take- 5 minutes after a shampoo
How to Market the Service- “We have a luxury shampoo special going on right now, with an additional 5 minute head massage in the shampoo bowl we are offering quick facials to help brighten the face and eliminate facial tension for $10.”
StateRiver Hot Towel Warmer for $109.99
✔️ Warmer holds up to 60 facial sized cloths or up to 20 hair salon towels
✔️ Inexpensive for how long the machine lasts
✔️ Easy On/Off Button
✔️ Heats up quickly
❌ The machine is bulky and can be difficult to place if there isn’t much counter or shelf space in the salon
❌ If not dried daily and if wet towels are left in it for more than 24 hours, the warmer can become musty or mildew-y
- Express Color Treatments such as camo-color gray blending, or toners that can be applied like a shampoo treatment
Express color treatments shouldn’t take longer than 30 minutes max, and that’s only if that’s now long the color product needs to process.
Depending on the color line, it could take up to 20 minutes to process, but there are some, like the Redken Camo Gray Blending color processes at 6 minutes max. It doesn’t completely cover gray but blends it in better.
A quick color service is great to market to men who aren’t so excited about their salt coming in to their pepper hair.
Cost of Service- $15 – $25
Time the Service Should Take- 4 – 30 minutes
How to Market the Service- “We have a gray blending product that takes 10 minutes if you’d like to give it a try, it doesn’t make your hair look too dark and different but helps keep those grays less noticeable.”
- Event Packages
What a huge money maker! If your salon doesn’t offer birthday packages, wedding party packages, or even bachelor party packages (for groomsmen) you’re missing out on a huge money day.
There aren’t events like these that happen in the salon every day, or even every week, but when they do wouldn’t you rather get all of the $$ that comes with such an event?
When it comes to special occasions most people like to think money is no object -but it is- and want to make the event as special as they can for whoever it is they are celebrating.
Cost of Service- Depending on the event and the number of people invited and the number of hours these services will take, you will calculate this by the cost of the product, the time spent, and the number of employees will be needed to cater to this event. Also, with your price for the event state that a 20% charge will be added for gratuity.
I recommend having an hourly set price for each event, without including tips. For example- Birthday Pamper Party – includes shampoo blowouts for everyone $45 per person as well as a complimentary hand massage. (30 minutes per person)
Bachelor Party – includes a haircut and shave for every gentleman, as well as a complimentary shampoo massage. (30-45 minutes per person)
How to Market the Service- Have a pamphlet or flyer on the reception desk next to the business cards. Or include the event hosting opportunities on your service menu.
Be sure that the staff understands how the event pricing works in your salon and they can keep their ears open for when clients mention that they have birthdays or big events that they are beginning to plan and can educate the guest on your offer.
- Carry Eco-Friendly, Vegan, and Cruelty-free Products
It has become trendy to only support businesses that carry eco-friendy, vegan, and exclusively carry labeled cruelty-free products in the salon.
Though I agree this is how salons should carry products that are eco-friendly and cruelty free, it’s not always possible to have the products we need available that are all labeled eco-friendly and cruelty free.
Be sure that these products are on retail shelves that are exclusively for these types of products and they are eye-level and marked as Eco-Friendly.
Time the Service Should Take- 30 seconds to talk to clients about retail products
How to Market the Products- Label the shelves and be sure to have the products back bared so that the stylists can use and discuss these products with guests while they are receiving their services.

- Service or Product Bundles
People love saving money! I do, and I’m sure you do too!
It’s hard to say no to a deal that is irresistible. Say every add-on service included a complimentary travel product sample, or every liter bottle of shampoo and conditioner bought together came with a 10% off a kid’s cut as well, this ensures that the client will want to come back and have a reason to come back. And tell their friends about the deal!
Cost of Bundle- A small percentage will be taken off, but the temptation to spend more for the client is more appealing and so they spend more than they planned to, which in the end makes you more money.
How to Market the Bundles and Deals- Be sure that your bundle deals are properly marked in the lobby, as well as on every station in the salon. You can even put it on a chalk board outside the salon.
Services to Add On for Women
- Deep Conditioning Treatment
Deep conditioning should be a regular thing that everyone gets every month or so.
As an add-on a deep conditioning treatment doesn’t take longer than 15 minutes and costs about $15 to start but increases $5 the longer the hair gets.
Cost of Service- The price of the product and the time it takes to process, roughly $15 for shoulder length hair, any longer length there is an additional $5
Time the Service Should Take- 15 minutes
How to Market the Service- “I’ve noticed that your hair is looking a little dry, does it seem dull to you at home? Do you have a deep conditioning mask you use at home? Would you like to add a deep conditioner to your service today? We use X deep conditioning mask, it lasts for 28 shampoos.”
Kenra Deeply Nourishing Mask 5oz for $24.49
- Volumizing Hair Treatments
Texas big hair! There are those that need the extra volume and those that need it only occasionally.
Volumizing treatments can take up to 30 minutes depending on the method you use in your salon and the products you use.
Cost of Service- The cost of the product and the time it takes to apply it – $20 – $30
Time the Service Should Take- 30 minutes
- Accessories (feathers, tinsel, mermaid strands etc.)
A fun little thing to add to hair for vacations, birthdays, back to school, and it’s so quick and easy to put in the hair!
Cost of Service- $10
Time the Service Should Take- Less than 10 minutes
How to Market the Service- If any of your stylists have feathers or tinsel in their hair, that is the first best way to market the service. Or have the feathers or tinsel next to the retail shelves for clients to see before their haircut service.
Colorful 100% Real Rooster Feather Extensions 20ct for $38.95
✔️ Varied Colors
✔️ Over 3000 Reviews
✔️ No license or certification required to apply feather extensions
- Braids or Quick Updos
Simple quick braids are great to offer as an alternative to a blow out. But if there is a clientele and a stylist or two in the salon to offer braiding services such as box braids or cornrows these are an excellent and expensive service that you can have on the menu.
Cost of Service- $5 for a french braid or regular braid instead of a blow dry style. Or $65/hour for other braiding services
Time the Service Should Take- 5 minutes to several hours depending on the braiding services.
How to Market the Service- Proper signage for braiding services and listed on the service menu
- Bang Trims
Bang trims are a quick service that can make you about $8 – $10 for 5 minutes of work.
Cost of Service- $8 – $10
Time the Service Should Take- 5 minutes
How to Market the Service- Bang trim must be listed on the service menu
- Hot Tool Style such as using a curling iron or flat iron
Great for special occasions or just because. But because using a hot tool does take more time it should be charged as an add on service.
Cost of Service- Hot tool style (curling iron or flat iron) starts at $20 and increases every 10 minutes
Time the Service Should Take- 15-30 minutes
How to Market the Service- No extra marketing needed unless added to a bundle or event promotion. On the service menu under updos, the hot too services should be listed.
If a client is expecting a curling iron to be used on their hair that would be established during the consultation when the stylist will explain that it is an additional charge.
- Gloss Treatments to make colors more vibrant and last longer, and make hair more shiny
Gloss treatment is a type of color process. Instead of depositing color it seals in the natural color, artificial color, and makes the hair shiny overall.
Cost of Service- $15 – $30 depending on hair length
Time the Service Should Take- 30 minutes. Application can be like a shampoo slapped on in the shampoo bowl and combed through to ensure even distribution, this should take no more than 10 minutes. Then 20 minutes of processing for a gloss treatment.
How to Market the Service- “You mentioned that you feel as though the color is a little dull, would you like to try a gloss treatment to liven up the color? A gloss is like a clear color, it seals in the color and brightens it at the same time.”
- Makeup services
Excellent for adding on with event bundles. Be sure that if your salon is going to add on makeup services that you have the proper products, licensing, and tools to be able to perform makeup services.
Cost of Service- $25 starting price, increase if the more than 20 minutes is needed, increase the price by $5 every 10 minutes
Time the Service Should Take- 20 – 30 minutes
How to Market the Service- Include this on the menu, the stylists will have the opportunity to share with the guest that if they are getting their hair done for a special occasion or a nice date, they can offer the service as an add on.
- Extensions
Some states require stylists to have specific certifications to use certain types of extensions. Be sure that your stylists are confident and have the correct training before offering extensions as a service in the salon.
However, if extensions are offered in the salon, they are a huge money maker!
Cost of Service- Minimum of $100 per hour
The price of the extensions themselves, which varies per brand and type of extensions + color or highlight process so that the extensions can be colored to match the client’s hair + the time it takes to place the extensions, the price of which varies state to state, city to city, and stylist to stylist.
Time the Service Should Take- Anywhere between 3 – 8 hours
- Lash Extensions
Eyelash extensions usually take an hour or two to do, but again, there are various kinds of extensions. Though eyelash extensions do take a special certification and training. Which makes sense, you’re using glue on someone’s eyes.
Cost of Service- $150 – $400
Time the Service Should Take- 1 – 2 hours
How to Market the Service- Eyelash extensions are great for adding on to package bundles and event bundles. Running promotions at the front desk, on the windows, and on the chalk board outside the shop are the best way to market the service.
Services to Add On for Men
- Men’s Haircuts
Some high end salons do not offer men’s cuts but focus on women. If men’s cuts are added to the service menu you can increase your salon revenue.
Cost of Service- $20 – $70
Time the Service Should Take- 30 – 45 minutes
How to Market the Service- If the salon is a primarily women’s salon just add men’s haircuts to the menu but also if guests ask if they can refer their husbands, sons, or boyfriends, they can!
- Line Ups and Neck Trims
A line up is when the front hairline is trimmed to a straight line, or the beard is being lined up under the chin and on the cheeks.
A neck trim is easy, it takes 5 minutes, and clients who don’t want a full haircut can get their hair off of their ears and off of the back of their neck without taking the time a full haircut would, and keeps the clients happy in between haircuts!
Cost of Service- $5 – $9
Time the Service Should Take- 5 minutes
How to Market the Service- Similar to a bang trim, you mention to your clients at the checkout after a haircut when you ask if they would like to rebook mention that they can come in for just a line up or neck trim in between haircuts.
- Beard Trims
When a man trusts a stylist or barber with their beard, they will see that stylist for the rest of their days!
Cost of Service- $15 – $25
Time the Service Should Take- 15 minutes
How to Market the Service- “Would you like me to trim the beard with the haircut today too? It’s an additional $15, it’ll help make the haircut look complete and sharp.”
- Shaves
Shaves CAN be done by cosmetologists and hairdressers, not just barbers. HOWEVER without a barber license you cannot use a straight razor, but must use a guarded razor.
Cost of Service- $21 – $45
Time the Service Should Take- 10 – 30 minutes
How to Market the Service- “Do you prefer a line up to be done with the trimers or a straight razor? A straight razor shave costs $21, but it lasts longer and is smoother than the trimmers. A trim line up is $15.”
Giving the comparison of prices to the guests as they are receiving the options of what service they might prefer.
